The Expanded Queen Mattress and Expanded Queen Mattress Set is a very interesting side note in the furniture industry. Simmons® Corporation federally registered the name Olympic Queen some years ago to denotate a new Queen size that they invented or started. This Queen size is 6 inches wider than a regular Queen but the same length. So as not to make things difficult for retailers and bedroom manufacturers, Simmons® kept the boxspring a Queen size and let the mattress hang over the boxspring by three inches on either side. It turns out that there was a market for this new size and it sold well. Simmons® being a large company, probably felt that the sales did not justify the new size and cancelled the Federal Registration of the name after a few years. Other mattress manufacturers wanted to jump on the Olympic Queen bankwagon prior to this time so they coined another new generic name, Expanded Queen, to describe this new size. Sadly, this size has fallen out of favor. Many people who own this Expanded Queen love it and are not able or do not want to go to either a regulation Queen (smaller) or King (larger) size when their mattress wears out.
